Uri was written for Isao Nakamura, and during its composition I was thinking about how his unique musicality could be demonstrated to the maximum effect.
As always, when I compose, I collaborated with him by spending many hours on Skype, experimenting with various percussion instruments and playing techniques. Sometimes we did this until midnight. It was very happy collaboration.
Uri uses Isao's favourite Brazilian percussion instruments, and both his sound world and using these instruments were completely new to me.
The title, Uri, is sort of melon like vegetable and one of the instruments which is used for the piece is made from the bottom part of this vegetable.
I heard from Isao that Uri also means "us" in Korean. We both liked this aspect of the title as well.

この作品はイサオ ナカムラさんの為に書かれた作品で、僕もどうやったらイサオさんのユニークな音楽性が最大に発揮できるかな、と思って書きました。
いつも僕が作曲する時と同じように、イサオさんに何時間もスカイプでいろいろ試して弾いていただいたり、時には深夜過ぎまで一緒に実験したり、その日に書いた小節のスクリーンショットをメールで送ってイサオさんにスマホで動画を自撮りしてもらい送り返してもらったりしました。その音源をこちらで繋げてみて、それを送り返して一緒に聴いたり、など本当のコラボレーションでした。
こういうのは作曲家として大変嬉しいです。
イサオさんの大好きなブラジルの打楽器を使った作品です。僕にとっては全く知らない世界。
ウリ、とはこの作品で使われる一つの楽器の底の部分に瓜が使われている、あと韓国語では「私たち」という意味もある、とイサオさんがおっしゃっておられたのもあり、「このタイトルで行こう！」と決めました。
イサオ ナカムラさんといえば僕が18歳だかの時にダルムシュタット夏期講習に（実はもぐりで）行った時に目の前に大きく「大阪」って書かれたTシャツを着て座っておられ、イサオさんはすでに大活躍だったのもあり、（シャイな僕は笑）お声をかけられずにいました。その何年も後にお会いした時にその話をすると「声かけてやー」とおっしゃってましたが笑
やっとイサオさんに新しい作品を書くことが出来て嬉しく思います。
