“Waves”
This
short piano piece was originally written to be a movement of
another piano piece, though for some reason this movement didn’t
fit in to the set of music I was writing and so it became
independent and unperformed.
Immediately
after this, I began writing my Piano Concerto No. 3 for the
pianist Yu Kosuge, and I was hoping that perhaps this material
would be a sketch or part of the piano concerto. Once again
though it didn’t end up being included in the concerto either; I
guess what this work is telling me is that it needs to be
treated as an independent piano piece!
In
“Waves”, it has two contrasting sections. The harmony of the
first section is gently and perpetually twisted in a lyrical
fashion (perhaps like the spiral shape of DNA) and the second
section is quite rhythmic, carrying a similar harmonic sense.”
